This National Volunteer Week, we reached out to Penrith Minibike’s life member and Sponsorship and Fundraising Coordinator Natalie Ferguson to celebrate and learn all about her volunteering journey.
How are you currently involved in Motorcycling? Tell us more about your local motorcycling club’s role in your volunteering journey.
In 2023, I am winding down my Minikhana adventure, passing my knowledge to club members on all facets of Minikhana and training members to do Race Secretary. This year my role in the Penrith Minibike Club is Sponsorship and Fundraising Co-ordinator.
My husband and I are Life Members, having been with the club for over 12 years. My children are focusing on Motorcross and I will endeavour to put my hand up wherever I go.
What are some invaluable life lessons you’ve learnt as a volunteer in motorcycling?
I have learnt to be respectful then be respected; to always lead with honesty and integrity.
The effort is all worth it in the end when you see the smiles of the kids and the lifelong friends that you make.
What do you believe are some of the best ways to recognise volunteers in our community?
One of the best ways to recognise volunteers in the community is an occasion like the MNSW awards. At a club level, I like to mention our great volunteers before riding commences for the day, always trying to make them feel deservedly noticed.
How important is mentorship in volunteering?
Being a mentor to other volunteers is so important to keep the sport going. There are so many roles and each is as important as the next. We need to train them so they have the confidence to jump in and have a go and feel comfortable enough to pass their knowledge on.
Who are some of the other top volunteers involved in motorcycling that come to your mind?
Carlie Roberts is the first person that comes to mind. She has been that mentor for me -to help me succeed in being the best I can be.
We weren’t even from the same club but I asked for her help and offered my help when I could – and from that, we became lifelong friends.
