For 14-year-old Jack Nunn, it doesn’t get bigger and better than the 2023 World Junior Motocross Championship. We caught up with the 15-year-old rider from Kiama to learn all about his motorcycling journey, ahead of his much-awaited trip to Romania for the event.
What was your first reaction upon receiving the news about being selected to represent Australia at the World Junior Motocross Championships?
I couldn’t believe it at first. I had been fishing with my mates at Kiama Harbour. When I got home my mum, dad and brother Rusty, had green and gold balloons and party poppers at home. It took me a while for it to sink in, but I was so happy.
Tell us a bit more about your motorcycling journey!
I started riding when I was about 7. I got a 50cc minibike for Christmas and used to just ride it around my nan’s farm. I ended up with a competition 50cc minibike and tried my first race at the Nowra Motoplex, my closest track. I loved racing and wanted to do more. Mum and dad couldn’t get me to a track to ride as much as I wanted to and told me I should train off the bike to get strong. Then I could ride better when I had the chance to ride. I really liked the fitness and training off the bike and have been doing it ever since.
We have since joined a few motocross clubs and tracks so I could race more. I really enjoy racing at Oakdale, they help juniors like me come through and are always friendly. They always prep it unreal and it’s proper motocross. I’m lucky I get to train at Nowra Motoplex. The Manager is always friendly and I hope they start a club there soon.
Have you been a part of such a big event before? What are you looking forward to the most at the World Junior Motocross Championships?
Going to the World Junior Motocross in Romania will be the biggest event I have been to. I have been lucky enough to previously race in the Australian ProMX in the 85cc class, do two Australian Supercross races, including a race inside the Marvel Stadium in front of heaps of people.
I’m looking forward the making motocross friends from other countries and I hope I can stay in contact with them. I’m also looking forward to seeing how I compare with riders from other countries on the track.
Anyone you’d like to give a shoutout to?
I would like to thank all of my current supporters and people who have supported me so far. I’m especially thankful for Matt Moss, who saw me racing at Canberra and ended up speaking with my parents. Since then, he has been helping me where he can by letting me train on the bike at his bootcamps, and sometimes helps get me to training when mum and dad can’t. I’d like to thank my two local clubs, Oakdale and Nowra, along with my supporters. Here’s also thanking my sponsors 102 Motorsports, Pascall Plumbing and Excavations, Fraser Motorcycles, MCS Online, KYT Helmets, POD Active, GUTS Racing, Link International, Send It Energy Drinks, Hostile Handware, Apro Motorsports, ETS Racing Fuels, Shoalhaven Oil Supplies, Costanzo Fitness.
