The weather was as hot as the on-track action at the Loxford Park Raceway last weekend, as Kurri Kurri Junior Motor Cycle Club staged this year’s Casey Stoner Cup.

Harry Ryan took the honours in the Senior Casey Stoner Cup, while Lachlan Russell emerged as the newest winner of the Junior Cup.

Earlier in the meeting, Ryan had a fall in a round of both the Pro 450 and Pro Open classes which kept him out of the overall placings in the same. But when it came to the one-off six-lap Senior Cup final, he dominated from the start to take the honours, also making it two years in a row.

Cody Lewis, also a former Junior Cup winner, finished second in the Senior Cup while 2020’s winner Boyd Hollis followed at third, ahead of Over 35s winner Danny Anderson who beat a number of younger riders home. Consistency rewarded the same trio of riders with a spot on the rostrum for both the Pro 450 and Pro Open classes, albeit with a different finishing order.

Jake Richardson topped Cody Lewis in the Pro 450, the positions were reversed in the Pro Open with Boyd Hollis third in both classes.

Danny Anderson winning the Over 35s was no surprise, but he did have a tough battle with Josh McCosker in several rounds. 

The other senior class was for Pre-1995 machines – where a small group of older riders enjoyed themselves and Ross Merrick finished as the most successful.

Unfortunately, numbers in the oldest age bracket for the juniors fell away leaving Lachlan Russell of Penrith and Jayden Holder of Kempsey to match-race each other. Both took a class win before Russell was awarded the victory after an extremely close finish in the one-off Junior Cup race.

The other junior classes also featured some impressive performers, beyond just the class winners.

Despite being a newcomer to dirt track with a motocross background, Max Earl ended up dominating his class with an unbeaten run, including several rounds where he had to come from behind.

Albury-Wodonga duo Cooper Antone and Jed Fyffe stood out in the 9 – U/13s where Antone won four of the five rounds to take the 65cc class. Antone looked set to make it a double in the final of the 85cc 2str / 150cc 4str Big Wheel class as well, until Fyffe passed him within metres of the finish line.     

Other junior winners were Danny Anderson’s son Brax Anderson, Cohen McCosker and Lockie Duggan.

Kurri Kurri Junior Motor Cycle Club is all set to host this year’s Casey Stoner Cup dirt track meeting this weekend (March 18 and 19) at the Loxford Park track. Named after the Moto GP world champion who was also a member of the club in his junior days, the event is sure to leave fans wondering if any of this weekend’s racers could go progress to featuring in a world championship competition like Stoner. 

Even in its relatively short history, the Casey Cup has boasted of an illustrious list of winners across both the senior and more recently initiated junior divisions, with Harry Ryan being among favourites to make it back-to-back victories in the senior cup, on the back of featuring in the recent Bathurst Long Track Masters. Boyd Hollis, four-time runner-up as well as winner back in 2020, is also in the line-up.

This year’s Casey Stoner Cup is no short of young guns, with the likes of Cody Lewis, Wade O’Keefe, Jake Richardson, Jayden Rodgers, Brayden Gay and the Hutchinson brothers Rory and Angus – all with good credentials.

The Junior Cup for the 13 to 16-year-olds may have attracted only a small entry, but a close battle is anticipated between Jayden Holder of Kempsey, Jett Carter of Bathurst and Alex Adamson of Penrith. The other junior classes will see some already talented youngsters in action as they move through the age brackets.

At the other end of the age scale, there is an Over 35s class which also promises and produces good racing, featuring former motocross star Danny Anderson among the starters.

Practice will get underway at 9.45 am on Saturday, with the first of five rounds of competition for all classes of seniors and juniors starting straight after practice.

 

Sunday morning kicks off at 9.30 am with the 70-event programme expected to wrap up around lunchtime, followed by presentations.

 

An entry fee of $5 per vehicle will get fans in to catch all the action.

Any doubts that junior riders can turn on thrills and excitement were cast aside as some exceptional young talent vied for honours at the 2022 Honda Coastal Motorcycle Centre New South Wales Junior Track Championship meeting staged at the Central Coast Junior Motorcycle Club track on Sunday November 27^th.

Big fields in four classes meant there were four rounds of two heats before a recharge and then final, while other classes were decided over five point-scoring rounds.

Regardless of the format maximum points were hard to come by and one-off deciding finals were never easy to win.

Only two riders won finals after being unbeaten in the heats – Hugh Hope-Hodgetts and Hugo Holmes and both have Australian Championships wins to their credit earlier in the year.

Hope-Hodgetts was also unbeaten in the heats of another class but was second in the final, while Holmes took a heavy fall while chasing Hope-Hodgetts in his final win..

Both Theo Afeaki and Taylen Howard scored class wins and a minor placing in another class and Riley Nauta also had a class win as a reward for his efforts.

The oldest junior age bracket (13 to Under 16s) produced the most decisive win with Thoren Openshaw winning his first four rounds and he could then afford to take it easy to finish third in his last round to seal a still decisive advantage on points.

Finishing behind him were Jayden Holder, Jett Cater and James Wood who all produced probably their best performances since entering this age bracket.

The small entry for the Girls’ classes provided the only dual winner of the day with Katarna Robinson overcoming Molly Fairey in both classes in what will be the last appearance in junior competition for both.

They met in 10 races – Robinson finishing with a 3-2 advantage over Fairey in both classes and they were seemingly within a few bike lengths of one another all day.

Blake Fairey did better than his sister as he finished with a 3-2 advantage over Max Carter to claim his class win.

While these names may not be significant to many fans in 2022 we never know what stage they might be performing on in years to come.

Some may continue racing dirt track, while others may find their way in to road racing, speedway or flat track racing in the USA.

Junior dirt track riders will have their last shot at championship glory for this year when the 2022 Honda Coastal Motorcycle Centre New South Wales Junior Track Championship meeting is staged at the Central Coast Junior Motorcycle Club track this Sunday (November 27).

The Central Coast Junior Motorcycle Club track is at Debenham Road North, Somersby.

This meeting was called off back in October due to the big wet and that has resulted in a smaller entry list from all across New South Wales and a small contingent coming from north of the border trying to maintain an impressive record of Queensland riders in the event.

Fans should never be deterred from watching junior racing as the riders are not just ‘tomorrow’s stars’, many are already accomplished racers and many could well be destined for higher honours even on the world stage.

That is one great aspect of watching junior racing – you never know where the riders you are watching will be in five, 10 or 15 years’ time.

Perfect example is that previous Australian or State Championships staged at Somersby 10 or 15 years ago have included the likes of Jack Miller, Remy Gardner and Joel Kelso who flew the Australian flag at Phillip Island in the recent 2022 Oz Moto GP meeting.

The likes of future world champions Casey Stoner and speedway duo Chris Holder and Jason Doyle also raced at Central Coast Junior Club events as part of their apprenticeship in the sport.

Dirt track racing continues to be a nursey for road racing and speedway, as well as some showing an interest in flat track racing in the USA.

Best credentialed entrants this Sunday are Hugh Hope-Hodgetts – providing he can escape from flooded Forbes – and Gunnedah rider Hugo Holmes who both have Australian Championship victories this year.

Queenslanders Theo Afeaki and Riley Nauta have been impressive at previous appearances at the Somersby track and are likely to be battling for honours on Sunday.

Riders aged between seven and 16 will chase championship honours including Albury-Wodonga rider Cooper Antone whose most recent outings have snared wins in both the Victorian and New South Wales Under 16 125cc Speedway Championships.

Honours in the 13 – Under 16s, which is the next group to head in to the senior ranks, may be decided between North Coast riders Thoren Openshaw of Taree and Jayden Holder of Kempsey.

Competitors will have a practice session after Rider’s Briefing at 9.30am. There are 70 events programmed for the day.

Fans can see the action for a $10 per vehicle entry fee as a donation to St John First Aid.

CENTRAL COAST CUP – IT’S ON THIS WEEKEND

The 2022 Honda / The Construction Team Central Coast Cup dirt track motorcycle meeting will be staged this weekend (June 4 and 5) at the Allen Park track at Somersby, near Gosford.  Since its inception in 2005 the Central Coast Cup meeting has established itself as one of the major non-championship meetings on the dirt track calendar.  Looking down the honour roll of winners in both the senior and junior (13 to Under 16s) classes you quickly realise how significant the Central Coast Cup is.  The senior class has been won by previous, or future, Australian champions and even a future world champion, while the Junior Cup has been won by a number of riders who have gone on to make a big impact in senior competition.

Host club rider David Smith will be striving to become the first rider to win the senior event for a fourth time, and so go one win head of former Queensland star Jace Castles who has also won three times.  If David Smith is to be denied a fourth victory, his toughest opposition would appear to be his brother Peter and a couple of teenagers who have made a big impact in their short time in the senior ranks.  Both Luke Bush and more recently Noah Cardinale have been prominent in their senior outings.  One interesting entrant is former speedway star Taylor Poole who will be making a rare dirt track outing.

There will definitely be a new name on the Junior Cup honour roll, with several stand-out contenders.  Cody Lewis who was placed third last year is probably entitled to favourtism but the likes of Jayden Holder, Thoren Openshaw, Cody Wilby and regular visitor from Brisbane Jhett Calderwood are likely to be prominent.  As well as the Junior Central Coast Cup the younger age brackets will showcase some of the emerging talent coming through the ranks.

A sprinkling of strong contenders from the North Brisbane and Gold Coast clubs are making the trip, and there is the usual strong entry of riders from the Newcastle area and Forbes.  Also on the programme to add to the variety will be races for older riders (Over 35s) and older bikes (pre1995) which invariably provide close and full-blooded action.

Action fires up on Saturday morning with three rounds of racing for all classes before the Clock on the Wall KO format for both seniors and juniors in the afternoon.  Sunday action gets underway at 10 am with two more rounds and finals of all classes before the 8-lap finals of both the Junior and then Senior Cup will wrap up the program.

Entry fee for spectators this weekend will be $10 per vehicle payable at the gate as a tax deductible donation to the St Johns First Aid.

The Allen Park track is situated at Debenham Road North, Somersby.
